The
surrounding area of Badenoch has been the lands of the
Clan Macpherson for centuries. The original seat of the Clan Chief,
Cluny
Castle
is located some miles to the west and other Estates such
as Ralia, Nuide, Banchor, Glentruim, Phones, Pitmain,
Invereshie and others
all belong to Clansman at one time or another.
Balavil
is the last Estate in the area, which has come down by
inheritance from an 18th century Macpherson.
Many of the antiques, paintings and silver in the
house also date from
this period. It is not surprising therefore that
the house and Estate are held in great respect by Macpherson
Clans folk from
all over the world.
At the annual Clan Rally of the
Macpherson in the first weekend of August, many clans
folk gather from all over the world
to Badenoch for a weekend of Highland Games, dancing,
singing and general fun.
The Clan has an excellent museum,
dedicated to its history in the village of Newtonmore.
